Chapter 9 - The SouthThe South developed a different culture, which emphasized agriculture. Most farmers in the South did not own slaves and were poor. Plantations help by slave-owners varied in size and wealth and held different numbers of slaves, but the large slaveowners dominated Southern society and politics. Enslaved African Americans led difficult lives, but they managed to create a unique culture and family life that blended African and American elements. Many of them resisted slavery, and some ran away or fought for their freedom.
